“When Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire at Monterey in 1967, it became an iconic image of an artist destroying the very instrument he used to create, as if the music had reached a point where it could no longer be contained by the instrument itself. That same energy has echoed through generations. Recently a Pianists took an axe to his piano, turning destruction into performance, and just yesterday I watched More Than Physics smash a handpan onstage right in front of me. Different instruments. Different generations. We create something beautiful, pour ourselves into it until it becomes almost sacred, and then someone comes along and breaks the sacred object to remind us that the music was never inside the wood, strings, steel, or shell.
